Believe it or not, hundreds of legal and illegal immigrants are being sent back to their home countries for medical care because they lack insurance. However, in some cases the FBI and police have come into stop forcible removals according to patients’ lawyers.
Arizona is able to do this because of federal and state law that mandates only U.S. citizen and legal residents are eligible for Medicaid. The state hospitals are pressured by Arizona leaders to transport non-citizens back to their native country.
This sounds good and all, but the cost to transport the non-citizen can be up to $100,000. The hospital (meaning your tax dollars) has to pay up to $100,000 to send the illegal immigrant back to Mexico! I don’t know if it would be cheaper to treat the illegalĀ alien patientĀ and then send them back by bus . . . but there has to be a better way.
